Dr. Arthur Murphy’s new article on the Worst Environmental Mining Disaster in the History of Mexico

Dr. Murphy’s article appears in the publication Argumentos Estudios Criticos de la Sociedad:  El agua de la nacion entre los derechos humanos y el mercado.   May through August 2020

This paper deals with the “worst environmental mining disaster in the history of México”. The 40,000 m3 of copper sulfate dumped into the río Sonora by a breach in a tailing dam at the Buenavista del Cobre, copper mine in Cananea, Sonora. The mine is owned by Grupo México. The paper analyses the social grammar revealed by the event and the degree to which the social order conserves the statu quo under the new administration.
